500,000 Nigerians displaced by flood disaster in Nigeria -NEMA

The Director-General of the Agency, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Sidi, disclosed this on Tuesday during a rapid assessment tours of flooded communities in Bayelsa State.
Sani-Sidi said that, “the country witnesses the debilitating effects of flooding with states like Sokoto, Jigawa, Kebbi, Nassarawa, Lagos, Ogun, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, among others, recording an incidence rate in which a total of about 500,000 Nigerians have been displaced and their properties and means of livelihood washed away.”
According to him, recent weather patterns in the country and indeed the world, has resulted in adverse ecological imbalances, adding that, “we are now victims of this fate wherever you go; North; South; East or West.”
He observed that although flooding in communities along the Niger trough and coastal communities was not new to the country, of flooding in places like Amassoma, Odi, Tombia, Sagbama, among others, and the extreme weather conditions experienced globally due to climate change was worrisome.
Sani-Sidi stated that while his agency would do all in its capacity to give succour to the affected persons whose lives and livelihood might have been washed off by the flood, he advocated a disaster free environment, through the establishment of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) by all state governors that was well structured and funded to manage the issues of disaster management in their localities.
