FORMER handler of the national U-20 and U-23 teams, Samson Siasia on Thursday emerged the new head coach of the Super Eagles. He succeeds Swedish Lars Largerback who left after leading the Super Eagles to the last World Cup in South Africa.
The appointment came after Siasia and former captain of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi were interviewed in Abuja by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the job. He is being given a four-year contract with the first two years as trial.
Siasia is to earn N5million as monthly salary, while his assistant will earn N3million. The NFF gave him an option to appoint his own assistant, while the body will name assistant coaches that will understudy him.
Reacting to the appointment of Siasia, NFF President, Aminu Maigari said due process was followed during the exercise before Siasia emerged.
Chairman, Technical Committee of the NFF, Barrister Chris Green, also told sports journalists that Siasia's appointment was purely based on merit.
Meanwhile, Siasia is to assume duty on December 1.
It will be recalled that the Bayelsa State-born coached the Flying Eagles to win African Youth Championship (AYC) in Benin Republic, before he led the team to win the silver at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Holland 2005.
He was also the coach of the national U-23 team that lost 0-1 to Argentina in the final of the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
