Police, robbers in war of supremacy!

Police, robbers in war of supremacy!

The arms, ammunition and car abandoned by fleeing robbers
By Albert Akpor & Ifeanyi Okolie
THE Lagos state police command has continued to re-affirm its zero tolerance for crime in the state with the  recent recovery of three AK 47 assault riffles and 630 live ammunition loaded in 20 magazines from fleeing armed robbers.  Venue was LASU/ Isheri road Igando and time was 8.30pm.
Intelligence reports was said to had reached a team of anti-robbery squad attached to Ojo Division and highway patrol men who were on a routine patrol of the expressway on the nocturnal movements of some persons in a Volkswagen saloon car marked OG 17FKJ.
The combined team promptly intensified their chase of the said car and at a spot near the LASU gate, the armed gang was said to had spotted the team and immediately opened fire on them.  The police responded accordingly.
Soon, the area was literally turned a theater of war.  Passers by scampered for safety while motorists made quick U-turn in apparent bid to avoid stray bullets.
The show of suppremacy between the men of the underworld and security agents which lasted for about 20 minutes later saw the armed  gang eventually bowing to the superior fire power of the police.
They abandoned their vehicle, jumped into the nearby swamp and disappeared into thin air.  Determined to get the fleeing dare devil robbers, the police combed the entire swamp but could not see the bandits that had just exchanged fire with them.  Back at the expressway, the vehicle was vigorously searched and 3 AK 47 assault rifles and 630 live ammunition were recovered in the vehicle.
Speaking on the feat,  an elated Command’s spokesperson, Mr. Frank Mba said the provision of security for lives and property in the state was a task that must be achieved.  The police image maker said, the command is not unaware of the mber months and the attendant anti-social vices stressing however, that variously security arraignments have been put in place to counter any form of criminality.
He assured that the Commissioner of police Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo has given a matching order to all anti-robbery teams in the command to fish out fleeing armed robbers as well as get the owner of the vehicle used.
Mba said, “ The command at the moment is intensifying its efforts and intelligence network to counter any form of criminal activity in the state.  We are conscious of the fact that mber months are usually replete with criminality and all forms of social vices and the men and officers of the command are  battle ready to counter and contain any such act.
As you can see, the men of the underworld had,  had to abandoned their get away vehicle and flee because they saw that Lagos state is no longer what it used to be for them.  And the CP is determined to maintain this tempo especially as the 2011 elections draws closer by the minutes.
Again, we need information to help us achieve our set objectives; without this information it would not have been possible for us to get to know of the movements of the armed gang.
Though the police PRO did not give details on how they will be able to unearth owner of the venton Volkswagen, a source disclosed that the police has already contacted vehicle licencing offices in Lagos and Ogun states with a view to determining whether it was snatched from its owner or one of the armed men owns it.
The source further disclosed that a 24 hour patrol of the area is already on adding, “In no distance time we will get the men behind the act.”
