Bayern to splash cash to keep Schweinsteiger

October 31, 2010
Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness is willing to break the bank in a bid to convince Bastian Schweinsteiger to commit his future to the club, after the German expressed an interest in the Premier League.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has been in fine form in recent months
Schweinsteiger's contract expires in 2012 and clubs are already lining up to take him away for a cut-price fee next summer should he not sign a new deal with the Bavarians. But Hoeness has told Schweinsteiger to name his price for a new contract.
''Bastian certainly knows what he has got here,'' he told LIGA total television. ''It is not like he is going to have to sign up for benefits. If our guys need more money from the board, then they will get it. We will not be tight because we know exactly how important he is for us.''
Hoeness also warned interested clubs to keep their hands off because they will not be able to compete.
''The guys from Real (Madrid) tried it with Franck Ribery and all they got was a bloody nose,'' he said. ''Everybody in Europe has got to start learning what they are up against with FC Bayern, and that it is not so easy (to sign our players).''
However, Schweinsteiger maintained that he did not know what would happen regarding his contract and expressed his admiration for the Premier League.
"I love the kind of speed of the English game but I don't know what will happen with me," he told the Sunday Times. "I have a contract until 2012 and we'll see.
"What I love is the atmosphere in English stadiums. When we played last year in Manchester it was fantastic. My brother is a big fan of Man U and he always says, 'Go to Man U, go to Man U.' I say, 'I can't, I can't. I watch the English games on TV and I like the Chelsea style at the moment. They're very strong."
The midfielder also claimed he admires the loyalty of the English supporters.
"For me, in England the fans are better," he added. "When the team give their best, they are not booing. It's more like they are fans more with the heart."

Bruce: I was right to turn down Newcastle job

October 30, 2010
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce claims that he has no regrets about refusing the chance to take over at Newcastle, as the two sides prepare to meet in the derby on Sunday.

Steve Bruce is enjoying his time at Sunderland.
Bruce has been repeatedly linked with the role at St James's Park - especially amid their chaos in 2008-09 when they were relegated to the Championship - but chose to move to Wigan and then to the Magpies' local rivals Sunderland; a decision he maintains was the correct one.
"I turned it down because it was not right, there were compensation issues and it wasn't right," Bruce told the Journal. "It was years ago. I went there, but it just didn't feel right so I turned it down. That is the facts. I turned it down twice. Instead I took a hell of a risk in going to Wigan with eight points when the Chinese were going in to Birmingham, I went to Wigan and did okay, thank the Lord.
"I am a big believer in what will be, will be, and it wasn't right at the time. It didn't happen. It was tough because there was obviously an emotional lure, but it wasn't right. I was driving away and it wasn't right. It should have been the other way."
One of the main reasons for his decision was the backing of the Sunderland board, in stark contrast to the Mike Ashley regime at St James's Park, and Bruce claims that stability is the key to success. He said: "I have got a fantastic job and I am very lucky. I have had difficult ones in the past where there is no stability. The greatest compliment I can give to this club is that from the commercial side, the media, ticket office, everyone wants the club to do well.
"Everyone is pushing in the right direction and in the same way. That stems from the owner down.
"I have a chairman (Niall Quinn) who knows what football is about. It is not like any other industry where you can buy something that will make you better. I am enjoying this job immensely. I hope I can keep carrying on by doing a decent enough job."

Pep Guardiola has strong ties with Barcelona
Ferguson, 68, has said he will continue at Old Trafford as long as his health allows, but he has recently spoken about the need to appoint a strong and experienced replacement when he does step down and he is expected to have input into the eventual appointment.
Jose Mourinho has been widely tipped as the next United manager, but reports in England and Spain have claimed Ferguson believes Guardiola is the ideal candidate.
Guardiola has refused to commit to a long-term contract at Barca, yet Zubizarreta has reassured the club's supporters that the coach is unlikely to leave Camp Nou any time soon.
"If Ferguson is thinking that way, he has excellent taste, but everybody knows the ties Guardiola has with Barca, which go far beyond the contract he has," he told Ona FM. "We are working on a long-term project."

Cattermole, who has already been sent off twice this season, has been told by Bruce to curb his aggression and pull out of challenges if necessary to avoid seeing red again.
But the former Middlesbrough man admits that holding back is not easy.
"After the second sending off, the manager didn't say one word to me until the day before the Liverpool game," Cattermole said. "Then he came up and said 'I don't want you to make a tackle tomorrow. If you have to pull out of a challenge, do so. I need you to play games by being on the pitch. Just your presence on the pitch'.
"I listened to him and went out and did that. It was hard because I do like to make tackles. Sometimes you see the ball and just want to get there. Since serving my ban, I've barely committed any fouls. I'm not counting, but it's certainly not many. I'm working on it, concentrating on my game.
"The game has changed, so everybody needs to change with it. If the manager thinks I can affect the game by not making tackles, by just being on the pitch and leading by example, then that's okay."
Cattermole knows that as Sunderland captain, and a former Middlesbrough player, he is likely to be greeted with a hostile reaction at St James' Park. But he believes Steve Bruce and ex-Toon defender Titus Bramble will get a worse reaction than him.
"I always manage to block hostile atmospheres out," he said. "Once the whistle starts I just concentrate on the game and our opponents. I don't really think about the crowd.
"Their fans have got a few to choose from apart from me, haven't they? Steve Bruce is a Geordie fella managing Sunderland, so he'll get some stick. And obviously Titus is going to get the worst."

THE Chairman of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Davidson Owumi, has tendered documents of defence at the Enugu office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following allegations of conspiracy to defraud the country, which was levelled against him by former board member of the body, Ray Nnaji.

Owumi was invited to the headquarters of the EFCC on Wednesday to answer questions, following a petition by Nnaji that he (Owumi) used his position as chairman of the Club Owners Association of Nigeria to commit fraud.

The EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Femi Babafemi, said yesterday that Owumi had reported to the office of the anti-graft body in Enugu, adding that the NPL boss had also submitted relevant documents to help the commission in its investigation.

“He has reported to our office in Enugu I must tell you. And I have also been informed that he has submitted documents relating to all the allegations levelled against him,” Babafemi said.

One of the allegations against Owumi by Nnaji was that the Club Owners Association of Nigeria operated as an illegal body.

He also said that Owumi, and other officials of Rangers ran a website, which they used illegally to sell players from the Enugu club.

The petitioner also claimed that Globacom Nigeria Limited paid N23 million to the Club Owners Association of Nigeria under the leadership of Owumi.

Owumi disclosed that he had submitted all documents related to the case.

“I have submitted documents to back up my answers, which the EFCC was seeking to know. They have the right to investigate any petition filed in. So I will cooperate with them to make sure that the case comes to a very good conclusion. Like I have said since this case came up, I will not run away from being investigated because I am not hiding anything.

“If I drove myself from Abuja down to Enugu to face the EFCC, I can also tell you that I am ready to clear my name of any wrong doing,” he said.

He continued: “Contrary to Nnaji’s claims, the Club Owners Association is not my company and is neither an illegal association. Instead, it has been in existence for over twenty years. Femi Olukanmi formed the Association with members like Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and others.”

On the alleged N23 million from Globacom, Owumi said it was untrue, stating that the club owners had no contractual terms with the company.

He explained that during the 2007 congress of the NPL, a motion was passed and adopted that one percent of the title sponsorship fee should be remitted to the club owners association.

“The money in question is meant to cover hotel accommodation and flight tickets of the club owners during matters relating to the congress meetings,” he explained.

Wenger: Walcott too quick for his own good

Wenger: Walcott too quick for his own good

October 28, 2010
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Theo Walcott's injury problems could be related to the mistimed tackles on him caused by his searing pace.

• Newcastle rubbish Hughton rumours
Walcott turned in a fine individual display as he helped himself to a double in the Gunners' 4-0 Carling Cup victory at Newcastle, which booked their place in the quarter-finals.
It was his first start since his return from an injury suffered on England duty and Wenger looked on with fingers crossed as he rode a series of committed challenges with no ill-effects. Wenger is not insisting that opposition players are out to get Walcott, but that the 21-year-old cops accidental kicks by players misjudging his lightning speed.
Wenger said: "At his pace, when you get stopped, you are always vulnerable. Tonight, he got one or two tackles and he got away with it because he did not have his full weight on his standing leg. But against Switzerland, for example, what can you do? He is not vulnerable because of his injuries, it was a tackle. When you play against a player who is so quick, sometimes you can mistime tackles. It's not necessarily always that you want to hit him, but he is so quick that you think, 'Now I can get the ball', and it has gone away.''
Walcott was simply too quick for Chris Hughton's much-altered side - both managers made nine changes - although Arsenal were the beneficiaries of two slices of good fortune as they established a 2-0 lead with 53 minutes gone. The had gone ahead in first-half injury time when Ryan Taylor attempted to clear Nicklas Bendtner's header off his own line, but saw the ball come back off keeper Tim Krul and drop into the net.
But there was more than a hint of controversy about the Gunners' second when Bendtner appeared to come from an offside position and block Mike Williamson as he attempted to head off Walcott, who finished with some style.
Bendtner's 83rd-minute strike and Walcott's second two minutes from time wrapped up a deserved win, but the Magpies could be forgiven for feeling somewhat aggrieved about the way the foundation was laid. They will now turn their attention to Sunday's Premier League clash with derby rivals Sunderland, a fixture which carries far more weight than Wednesday night's for the supporters.

Ramires adapting to Chelsea pressure

October 27, 2010
Ramires says he is still having to adjust to life in the spotlight at Chelsea but feels he is settling well into the Premier League.

Ramires says his Chelsea team-mates have helped him settle in
Ramires, who left Benfica this summer, had faced criticism for some of his early performances with the Blues, such as in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, and he says he is not used to such widespread scrutiny.
"At Cruzeiro and Benfica, there was also huge pressure to get good results," he said. "The difference at Chelsea is that the level of visibility is so much greater. That means you're singled out more when you play badly and there's more hype when you play well."
He added: "I'd never played in a country with a different language before, which makes things a bit trickier, but I'm taking English classes and hope to get a handle on it soon.
"There are times when I'll have an off day or not perform as well as expected, just like any other player, but that won't have anything to do with how I've adapted or not.
"The players here at Chelsea couldn't have welcomed me any better and the club provide me with everything I could need."
Ramires now appears to have settled in at Stamford Bridge and feels the way he plays is well-suited to the English game.
"As well as being a player who tries to start moves when I have the ball, I've always liked a tackle, so that's why I'm not finding it very hard to adapt," he said. "I'm already getting used to the speed of the game over here.
"All I need to do now is to keep working hard to earn my spot in the side and help the team stay as successful as they've been in recent years."
An injury to Frank Lampard two months ago gave Ramires his chance at Chelsea.
"Since then, I've played a few times as a box-to-box midfielder, which is my original position and the same one where Mano Menezes has been using me for the national team but, to be honest, it's not hard for me to play anywhere in midfield," he said.
"I'll play whichever way Ancelotti thinks works best for the team at any given time."

Yobo says Nigerian football can now move forward

yoboSUPER Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, is excited at the withdrawal of the suit by the National Association of Nigerian Footballers (NANF) against the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), saying it is a step towards moving Nigerian football forward.

The Fernabache defender, who spoke from his base in Turkey on Monday, declared that he was not interested in the politics of the game but the continued existence of football in the country.

He said was therefore happy that the controversy has been settled finally and football in Nigeria would now go on as expected.

“In as much as I am a football player whose duty is to play for the country and I am not an administrator who plays the football politics, I am very happy that football family is back together in the interest of the game in the country,” Yobo told MTNFootball.com.

“What we as players want has happened because it is in unity and very conducive atmosphere that Nigerian football can continue to wax stronger. The players are ready to contribute their own with the strong backing of the administrators and soccer-loving Nigerians.

“I am very confident that Nigerian football will reach its desire height with everyone coming together to make his own positive contribution.”

Before the game Mourinho said his players would be "dead to me" if they suffered an embarrassing defeat after Manuel Pellegrini's Real were humbled by Alcorcon last season.
Mourinho, who remains unbeaten as Madrid coach with nine wins from 12 games in all competitions, also vowed that his side would progress through to the last 16 when they meet Murcia in the second leg at the Bernabeu next month.
''I'm happy with the team. We played a serious game and wanted to win. My criticisms are for those who don't work as hard as they can, and this wasn't the case,'' said Mourinho, who sent out a strong side with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Iker Casillas and Karim Benzema all starting.
''There are no criticisms of my team, I'm happy with them despite the result, which we don't like because we always want to win. 'We worked hard and had chances to score. We had some limitations due to the absence of more creative players like (Xabi) Alonso and (Mesut) Ozil.
''Murcia worked well, We didn't win because their goalkeeper had a fantastic night,'' added Mourinho, whose side beat Racing Santander 6-1 at the weekend to take their tally to 16 goals in their last three league games.
''I'm going away from here satisfied with the people who have played. They've all tried and that's important.''
The former Inter Milan coach is also supremely confident about his side's chances of progressing through to the last 16, adding: ''If you look at the tie from a two-leg perspective, then it's a good result.
''We are going to win the match at home and we are going to get through. I'm convinced we will get through.''

City to end lavish spending
Gill: United can compete with City
According to figures released this week, the City owners invested a further £79.6 million into the club last month to take the total investment to £573 million since the 2009 takeover.
Under UEFA's new rules, designed to ensure clubs are self-sufficient, benefactors will only be able to contribute approximately £40 million in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons and that figure will drop to around £26 million for the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.
From 2011-12, clubs will only be able to make a loss of €45 million (£39 million) per season and, when UEFA's rules are fully enforced, they will have to break even, leading many to fear City could face exile from the Champions League and Europa League.
City's income for 2009-10 was £125 million but wages were at £133 million, with the club's loss standing at £121.3 million. However, Cook told the Guardian that the loss incorporated investment in the stadium - such as the City Square dining experience - and that spending on new players will now be curtailed.
"Yes, the annual report shows income growth and the loss, which people are asking questions about, but when you look from a broader perspective, there are investments not only for the team but for the fans," he said. "The aim is to enhance the experience of this football club for all those that touch it.
"Clearly our intention is to comply (with Financial Fair Play rules). Our two-year plan was to take a budget and build a competency to compete at the highest level, not forgetting the need for succession planning in every position.
"We are pleased with how that worked and will not be signing players to the same level of intensity in the next transfer windows.
"Financial fair play is on our conscience. We talk about it at every board meeting and it's part of our long-term plan."
City have faced criticism for what is perceived to be excessive spending on signings and wages, with some believing the arrival of billionaire owners has taken the game away from the fans.
"Critics only have their own perspective," Cook said. "They're not at the football club - they haven't been part of the planning or the long-term financial strategies.
"People think we choose players from the fantasy football league but there was a clear plan for who Roberto (Mancini) wanted to sign. One of the perceptions was that we only buy foreign players, then suddenly people saw that six of the England team who finished against Switzerland were City players.
"When people see the good things we are actually doing, they seem to be enlightened."
